As an adjective, cathartic means psychotherapeutic or emotionally beneficial; viewing art or listening to music may be cathartic experiences.
I have found writing to be cathartic. It seems that stress brings on a catharsis of the fingers and is a cathartic of my mind. As a noun a cathartic is a laxative. Which means my mind runneth over.
